The Winds of October - Killarney Solo Canoe Trip - 4K
Переглядів 12 тис.10 місяців тому
A chilly October 5 day solo canoeing and hiking adventure in Killarney. I get a little bit of everything in this one, including the first snow of the season and some wicked winds that almost catch me out while crossing David Lake. I hike up Silver Peak and take in the amazing 360 view from the top. The La Cloche Range is about 2.3 million years old and these peaks used to be higher than the Roc...

Scott and I head out for a solid six day late September stretch in the Algoma region. We hit a mix of parkland and public land in this rugged loop. Wild winds, misty mornings, fall colours and some clear starry nights. This area has low levels of light pollution... great for astro types. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy. Drop a comment, tell all your friends, smash that thing. #camp #camping...

A four day backcountry canoe trip in and around Mississagi P.P. We hit a mix of park land and crown land, ultimately hiking up and spending our last night on top of Old Baldy. Rugged portages, pretty lakes, unexpected solitude, magic misty mornings and stunning starry nights during the new moon. I see now why people refer to this as one of Ontarios best kept canoe camping secrets! Enjoy, and pl...

Algonquin Spring Solo - Ice Out Solo Canoeing in Algonquin Provincial Park
Переглядів 23 тис.3 роки тому
This Tumblehome Adventure footage has been sitting on the shelf for four years! Shot in spring of 2016, this ice out solo on the west side of Algonquin Park was a much needed return to tripping, after suffering - what I believe to have been - some sort of viral or bacterial infection that left me fairly sick and doing not much physical activity for about 18 months. The sickness began in earnest...

This is not a trip video! It's akin to an aquarium or fireplace video... but made for canoe heads. Pull your head out of the Covid news barrage and unwind with sixty minutes of the sights and sounds of French River Provincial Park, as seen from a canoe in the days just after ice out. Early morning to late evening, flat water and rapids. The only chatter you'll hear is the birds. The song of the...

A little peek at some late fall camping in French River Provincial Park. I headed up for a chilly last blast canoe trip with Jordan Walmsley and Laura Hulsman in October 2019. We made base camp at a fine location just up from Blue Chute and spent 4 days exploring, hunting, taking photos and swapping stories. This clip was from a narrow passage that meandered behind our site, leading to a quiet ...

    Late Oct. is a sketchy time to take on trips like this. One night of heavy wet snow, often 1 foot or more will dramatically degrade ones ability to travel, sleep, get dry. Tricky portages become extremely high risk with invisible hazards and highly slippery conditions. Sleeping accommodations especially the like of amok hammocks are entirely dysfunctional as wide body tarps are unusable under the weight of snow. Common exit strategies that often involve seasonal forestry roads become unusable, most unfortunate if your vehicle is waiting for you many KM's from maintained roads. You guys went into this just barely prepared for the weather conditions you got which is really fair weather conditions for late October. Yes you did fine and it seems it was a decent trip but consider how it's different if winter actually decides to give you it's first blast. A message more for those viewers that may need a reminder to keep the overconfidence in check when the wanderlust starts becoming an insatiable itch to be scratched. Late fall is absolutely not the time to be overconfident in ones backcountry abilities. Camping in January is way safer than late fall as you enter fully prepared for winter.

    I really enjoyed your video that showcased how the simple sights and sounds of Nature can soothe our souls. One small suggestion. As the spring peepers, chickadees, yellow-rumped warblers, and white-throated sparrows were prominent, it would have been useful to put a caption up when they sang. Great work.

      THanks! I'm working on getting to know the different bird sounds :-) I couldn't name half of them in the moment but often look them up after. I agree, it would be neat to identify them during the vid.

    How many years do you think the Garmin In reach Mini will last before the non-replaceable battery is no longer chargeable? I am looking at options and this is something I might use a couple of trips a summer. But it would be great to have for the partner who can't navigate if I die or something.

    • @JasonIrwinTumblehome
      @JasonIrwinTumblehome 4 місяці тому

      Good question really. I've had mine for 5yrs ish and haven't seen any noticeable decline in retention. The newer ones last even longer apparently. Mine easily lasts me a week out in the bush with an average of 1 to 2 hrs of on time per day. I just use it to check weather periodically and to send a daily check in. If the batter started to go, I imagine it can be run with cable and power bank. It has a small yearly charge + a monthly fee but you can put the account into offline for the times you arent using it.

Question: I always watch your videos on my TV, so the aspect ratio you have chosen is because most of your audience watches them on their phones? Nicely captured, the devastation of nature due to negligent human presence.
